- There two main export types we will cover in this tutorial are .3DS, and .FBX. If you are familiar with
importing files into Max, you might recognize .3ds files, while the .fbx file type is less common. Both files
types will
allow you to successfully bring your model into Max, but there are some differences in workflow
for each.
- When you hit the “export” button, Sketchup will not only save your exported model,
but also a copy of any materials you have applied to it.
Why use .FBX over .3DS?
In some situations, exporting your model as a .fbx file can be
the most efficient method. This is because .fbx imports have
all materials immediately applied correctly and visible in the
viewport of Max, saving you time and effort.
Importing .FBX:
In Max, select File > Import. You can leave the settings in this
new window as default, or you can play around with the options
available. (One option is to choose to only import specific
elements
of your file.)

- In some cases, .fbx format will cause problems with your geometry. You may find additional polygons
on your model that do not belong, some of which intersect incorrectly or are not attached properly
in the first place. If this is the case, you can either manually clean up your geometry in Max, or
try using the
.3ds export file type.
