- Importing as .3DS -
In Max, select File >Import. Leave the settings as default for now and select OK.
- Where are my materials? Unlike the .fbx file type, .3ds exports come into max without their materials
immediately visible in the viewport – but they are still applied to the model! Here is what you do to see them:
- First you must ensure that the materials are pathed correctly.
Open up your utilities panel in the top right hand corner of
the screen (the hammer icon). Click the “More” button.
- From the list, choose “Bitmap/Photometric Paths”. Underneath
the
Path Editor rollout that opens, click the “Edit Resources” button.
I still can’t see my materials!
Don’t worry, that’s just because they are still not yet set to display.
- Hit the
‘M’ key to open the
material browser.
- The editor that opens displays the location on your computer
of every texture file in the scene. Select every file in the list
(click the first file, hold shift, click the last file) and then
select the “…” button located to the right of the “New Path”
text-box. Navigate to the folder where your sketchup textures
are located and hit ok. Then click the Set Path button. This step
ensures that max knows where to look for the materials already
applied to your imported model.
